The Frankfurt and Rhein-Main transportation network

In Frankfurt and the Rhein-Main area, the S-Bahn (commuter trains) and the U-Bahn (underground trains), regional trains, buses and trams combine to provide a well structured public transportation network. And no matter where you want to go, you only need one ticket: the about 150 transport companies in the region are all part of the tariff system of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV – Rhein-Main transportation network).

For example, not only all of Frankfurt, but neighboring districts, such as the Main-Taunus district or Darmstadt-Dieburg, as well as many cities – from Wiesbaden and Offenbach to Fulda, Marburg, Rüsselsheim and Mainz, are in the RMV network, covering 14,000 sq km. On an average workday, about 2,5 million passengers use the RMV’s transport buses, trains and trams. In 2016, about 735 million passengers were transported.

Besides transport companies from Deutsche Bahn to small operators with just three buses, important partner companies in Frankfurt include the VGF (Frankfurt am Main transport association) and traffiQ, which is responsible for supervision, planning and financing of Frankfurt’s ÖPNV public transport network.
