Whether playing soccer, horse-riding, walking or sailing – Hamburg residents are always on the move. The city has lots of sports possibilities with its many expanses of green space and water, which give it a high recreational value. Every day about 10,000 people jog, walk, skate or cycle around the Outer Alster Lake, where thousands of sailors or rowers take to the water when the weather is good. More than 500,000 citizens are active in about 800 clubs in Hamburg’s sports association. There are also around 170 gyms and countless sporting leisure activities not organized through sports clubs, such as bowling centers and dance schools. Several times a year, thousands of Hamburg residents also flex their muscles together at one or other of the city’s large sporting events. One of the most important events is probably the Hamburg Marathon, which since 2011 has the Hamburger Stadtsparkasse as its main sponsor. Every year about 23,000 runners take up this challenge. Other annual highlights that you can take part in are the Wilhelmsburger island run in April, the Barmer Alsterlauf run in September, the “hella hamburg half-marathon” and the HSH Nordbank charity run, which will take place for the 17th time in Juli, 2018.
Last but not least there’s also the well-known ITU World Triathlon, in which over 8,000 “average” men take part in the three disciplines of swimming, cycling, and running alongside professional competitors. If running is not your thing, there are many other possibilities for keeping fit in and around the city including indoor climbing Nordwandhalle, canoeing on the Alster canal or even skiing at Europe’s most modern indoor ski slope.
