Important authorities for newcomers to Munich

Forms here, signatures there – before you can watch TV, make phone calls, turn on the heating or simply switch on the lights in your new home, a few administrative steps are required. One of the most important is registering your address with the local authorities.

According to the German Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz), you are required to register your new address within two weeks of moving in. In Munich, this is done at the Citizens Office (Bürgerbüro) of the District Administration Department (Kreisverwaltungsreferat, KVR) or at one of its local branches.

If you keep a residence in another city, please note that Munich charges a second home tax (currently around 18% of the annual net rent). And let’s be honest – you only really feel like a true Munich resident once it’s written on your ID.
